PSLE Chinese Oral (华文口试): how to prepare in the final weeks (朗读 + 看录像会话)

The PSLE Chinese (华文) Oral is 50 marks — 25% of the grade — and one of the first papers. A practical, SEAB-based guide to 朗读篇章 (Reading Aloud, 20) and 看录像会话 (the video-based Conversation, 30): what happens in the room, the pronunciation traps, and how to practise.

If your child sits PSLE Chinese (华文), the Oral (口试) is one of the first papers — and, like the English Oral, it is the fastest component to improve in the final weeks. It rewards exam technique, not just being a confident speaker. This is the companion to our PSLE English Oral guide; for the full subject breakdown see PSLE Chinese exam format explained.

📌 In one line. Chinese Oral is 50 marks (25%), about 10 minutes, after ~10 minutes of prep. Two parts: 朗读篇章 (Reading Aloud) 20 and 看录像会话 (video Conversation) 30. The flow is prep + watch the video → read aloud → conversation — and the conversation is worth more.

What actually happens in the room

  1. Preparation (~10 min) — at a station with headphones, your child watches a ~1-minute video clip and gets the passage to read. The clip can be paused, rewound and fast-forwarded — so re-watch it and plan what to say.
  2. 朗读篇章 (Reading Aloud, 20 marks) — read the passage aloud to the examiner. They listen for pronunciation, pausing, fluency, and feeling.
  3. 看录像会话 (Conversation, 30 marks) — talk with the examiner about the clip: what happened, what your child thinks, and how it links to their own life.

Part 1 · 朗读篇章 (Reading Aloud, 20 marks)

多音字 Characters with more than one reading (e.g. 长 zhǎng/cháng, 得 de/dé/děi) are the classic trap — decide the right reading in prep.

翘舌 / 平舌 Keep zh·ch·sh·r distinct from z·c·s. Blurring them is where marks quietly go.

轻声 Neutral-tone syllables (妈妈, 好吗, 我们) should be light and short, not forced into a full tone.

停顿 Commas and full stops are real stops. Phrase by meaning; rushing costs marks.

感情 Match the mood — happy, worried, excited. A flat, robotic read scores low even if every character is right.

The 10 minutes Skim the passage, circle 多音字 and hard characters, mark where to pause and which words to stress.

Part 2 · 看录像会话 (video Conversation, 30 marks)

Use the video In prep, watch it more than once — note what happened, who was involved, and how you feel about it. You'll draw on this in the conversation.

说清楚,说完整 Answer in 2–4 sentences, never one word: say what happened, then what you think.

加个人经历 "有一次,我……" (once, I…) beats a generic answer every time — a real example scores.

表明看法 For 你觉得 / 你会不会 / 你同意吗, say what you think first, then give a reason.

别卡住 Buy time with "我觉得……" rather than a long silence.

不要背稿 The examiner follows up — memorised answers fall apart the moment they do.

Where marks quietly leak

  • Reading too fast, with no feeling. Fluent-but-flat still loses expression marks. Slow down and read to the listener, not at the page.
  • Slurring 翘舌/平舌 and skipping 轻声. These are the reading-aloud marks most children leave on the table.
  • Describing the video instead of talking about it. "There was a boy and a dog" is a start, not an answer — add opinion + reason + your own experience.
  • One-word answers. The examiner can only reward what your child says. Aim for 2–4 sentences each turn.

A final-weeks plan (10 minutes a day)

  • Days 1–4: one short passage aloud each day. Record it, play it back, fix 多音字 and 翘舌/平舌 first.
  • Days 5–8: one everyday theme a day (school, family, food, environment, screen time). Watch or picture a short scene, then talk for a minute: what happened → what you think → a reason → your own example.
  • Days 9+: full mock — 10 minutes of "prep", read aloud, then a 3-minute conversation with a parent asking follow-ups. No scripts.

🎯 Rehearse oral at home. 方方华文, our P5–P6 Chinese iPad app, includes guided 口试 (oral) and 听力 (listening) practice — the two parts hardest to rehearse at the dining table. See 方方华文 or download it on the App Store.

The Oral rewards clear pronunciation, real feeling, and developed answers — all of which improve fast with a little daily speaking. Ten focused minutes a day between now and the exam goes a long way.
