PSLE English Oral: how to prepare in the final weeks (Reading Aloud + Conversation)

Oral is the first PSLE 2026 paper (12–13 Aug) and 20% of the grade — and the fastest to improve in the final two weeks. Here's how.

📌 The format (SEAB). Oral is 40 marks / 20%, about 10 minutes with ~5 minutes of preparation. Two parts, not linked: Reading Aloud (15) and Stimulus-based Conversation (25) — a conversation with the examiners based on a photo.

Part 1 · Reading Aloud (15 marks)

SEAB's task: read aloud a text to suit the purpose, audience and context of a given situation. It's not about speed or a "posh" accent — it's clarity and expression.

Word endings Don't drop -ed, -s, plurals — the marks quietly go here.

Pause Full stops and commas are real stops. Slow down; rushing costs marks.

Expression Match the mood — curious, worried, excited. A flat, robotic read scores low even if every word is right.

Stress Emphasise the key words; questions rise, statements fall.

Audience Read as if telling it to that listener in the situation, not reciting.

The 5 minutes Skim it, spot hard words, mark where to pause and stress.

Part 2 · Stimulus-based Conversation (25 marks)

SEAB's task: engage in a conversation with the examiners on a topic based on a photo stimulus. The examiner asks the first question — you answer, they follow up, and it builds from the photo → your own experience → your opinion. It's a conversation, not a prepared speech — and it's about the topic, not just the picture.

Topic, not photo Use the photo as a springboard, then talk about the topic — don't just describe the picture.

TREES Thoughts · Reasons · Examples · Experiences · Suggestions. Build 2–4 sentences, never one word.

Own experience "Once, when my class…" beats a generic answer every time.

Take a stance For "why / would you / do you agree", say what you think first, then justify it.

Don't freeze Buy time with "Well, in my opinion…" — not a long silence.

No scripts The examiners follow up — rehearsed answers fall apart the moment they do.

Where marks quietly leak

• One-word or undeveloped answers in the conversation — the single biggest loss on the 25-mark half.
• Flat, rushed reading and dropped word endings.
• Describing the photo instead of discussing the topic behind it.
• Freezing into silence.
• Over-rehearsed answers that collapse under a follow-up.

A two-week home practice plan

You don't need a tutor — you need 15 focused minutes a day.

1. Read aloud daily. One short passage from any storybook. Record it, play it back, and fix expression and word endings. Two weeks of this is visibly better.
2. Practise the answer frame. Show your child any photo — a news picture, a family photo — and ask: What's happening? Has something like this happened to you? What do you think about it? Push for opinion + reason + example + extension.
3. Follow up on purpose. After each answer, ask one more "why" or "what would you do?" — this trains recovery, the skill scripts can't fake.
4. Do one timed run. Once a week, give 5 minutes of prep, then perform both parts start to finish, so exam conditions feel normal.
